South Africa
South Africa, though often thought of as "the new world", has been producing wines since the 18th century! After years of virtual isolation from the wine producing world, South Africa has been on the fast track to proving it can compete with the best in world winemaking.
Each year, more and more Cape wines catch the eye and palate, with Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in particular showing South Africa can turn on the style. Thanks to big investment and a perfect winegrowing climate, the wines strike a great balance between the fruity styles of the new world and the more restrained delicacy of the old.
Bibendum Fact
Pinotage, South Africa's signature red wine grape variety, was invented in 1927 by crossing Cinsault with Pinot Noir. A bit of a "marmite" wine, it divides opinion; you either love it or hate it.
