Germany

German wines are truly underrated, but are great value for money. The finest of all German wines are produced from the hardy Riesling vine, which grows on the steep banks of the rivers Rhine and Mosel. These picturesque valleys, many with gradients of up to 72%, take true dedication to farm. The vineyards are often too steep for any mechanisation and the pickers have to be winched up and down on makeshift harnesses. The resulting wines are often outstanding quality. German Rieslings are full of mineral character and are some of the longest lived white wines in the world.

Bibendum Fact

The famous (and dreaded) Liebfraumilch, which many critics argue has tarnished the reputation of German wine, is virtually unheard of in Germany - the tiny quantities that are sold in Germany are mainly reserved for tourists!
