Australia
Australian wine has all but revolutionised the way wine is marketed and sold across the world. With a country wide focus on quality, accessibility and getting the best out of varietals, no-one can deny that a great Barossa or Coonawarra Shiraz, or a Hunter Valley Semillon isn't up there with the best wines in the world.
Although it was full flavoured, fruit driven wines that Australia built its reputation on, there are plenty of cooler climate regions which are producing more restrained, elegant wines. Look out for Rieslings from Clare or Eden Valley, Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from the Mornington Peninsula, or even Margaret River, in Western Australia where the climate is very similar to Bordeaux. No wonder their Cabernets and Merlots taste so good!
Bibendum Fact
You can fit 32 UK's into one Australia and you would clock up 2750 miles driving from Sydney to Perth. Which is roughly like taking a hovercraft from Land's End to Boston. That's Boston, America...
