Phil Woodward together with Walla Walla investors, formed Canoe Ridge in 1989. Sited on the northern bank of the Columbia River, the estate is planted primarily to Merlot. John Abbott is the winemaker and the intense Merlot fruit for which Canoe Ridge has become known benefits from a long growing season, extended hang time and the marine influences of the Columbia River. This protects the estate vineyards from extreme weather in the winter and provides cool breezes in the summer. The 1998 Merlot is easily the best wine to have been released.
