Producer Information
The name 'Sassicaia'; meaning 'place of many stones', reflects the gravelly soil upon which the vineyards are planted, much like the Medoc region of France. The estate; called Tenuta San Guido which is located in the Bogheri region of Tuscany, produces one of the most sought after fine wines in the world. This is largely due to the innovation and drive of proprietor Mario Incisa Della Rochetta who was one of the first to plant Bordeaux varietals on Italian soil.
Sassicaia in its present blend consists of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. Approximately 15,000 cases are produced annually and the first vintage was released in 1968 to critical acclaim; becoming one of the first Super Tuscans.
These are truly special wines and are now widely accepted as part of the world's best Cabernet Sauvignons; with its extraordinary power and length, and intense notes of cassis and cedary elegance. The estate recently made history by becoming the first single wine to be granted its own DOC!
