Tasting Notes

"The first thing I noticed about the 2006 Langhe Sperss is the finish, which literally lasts an eternity. It, too, is more overtly structured, powerful and less fruit-forward than the 2007, but its focus and drive are commendable. The wine seems to hover on the palate with an ethereal expression of dark fruit, smoke, licorice, tar and menthol, all of which are backed up with substantial heft and sheer muscle. This is a marvelous effort from Gaja and will appeal most to readers with a preference for sturdy, age-worthy wines. Anticipated maturity: 2021-2041." 97 points, Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate

Producer Information

Angelo Gaja came from a family of wine makers, but rather than following in his father's footsteps, he trod his own path. Gaja revolutionised the wine business in Barbaresco and beyond. Having studied in France, Gaja was responsible for the introduction of temperature controlled fermentation, malolactic fermentation and French barriques, not to mention the use of French varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Prices are high! The portfolio is led by a number of Barbaresco crus (another Gaja innovation - the bottling of single vineyard wines) which are Sori Tildin, Sori San Lorenzo and Costa Russi. There are two Barolo crus - Sperss (meaning nostalgia) and Conteisa Cerequio. In addition the Super-Piemontese wine Sito Moresco is a delicious blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera and Merlot. Using French varieties he produces Darmagi (Cabernet Sauvignon) and Gaia e Rey (Chardonnay).

It is nearly impossible to overstate the influence of Angelo Gaja on the Italian wine scene and its lofty reputation among connoisseurs. An icon of worldwide fame; Gaja brought a level of drive and ambition more typical of a corporate raider to a relatively low-key business when he assumed control of his family's estate in Piedmont. The name Gaja on a label has become a kind of badge of honor for a wine bottle signifying rarity, pedigree and certainty.
