Producer Information
Domaine du Pegau dates back to the 17th Century when olives, cherries and grapes were farmed on this estate. It is named after a 14th Century wine jug which was known was a 'pegau'. It is today still run by the same family; Laurence Feraud and her father Paul. They are widely regarded as one of the leading producers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape; producing rich, robust and concentrated wines, which tend to show best after 7-8 years of bottle age. The property is made up of 11 separate vineyard parcels totalling 18 hectares; 'La Crau' is one of the oldest of the vineyards, planted in 1905.
The red (a small quantity of white is also produced) is a blend of 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah, with the remaining 5% being made up of Mourvedre, Counoise and other varieties. The grapes are hand harvested and are then fermented without being de-stemmed. Vinification is minimalist and traditionial; with no fining or filtration. Prior to Laurence joining the family business in 1987, Paul sold much of the wine to negociants. Paul himself learned the trade from his mother; a self-taught 'vigneron' of local repute, who bottled wines under the family's previous label 'Domaine Feraud et fils'. This is a historic domaine which encapsulates all the charm of the Southern Rhone and is highly recommended.
