Producer Information
Chateau de Beaucastel forms part of the great Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation in the Southern Rhone region of France. Beaucastel is famed as the only Chateau to use all 13 different grape varieties that are permitted under the rules of the appellation. The signature grape however is Mourvedre, used in equal measures with Grenache.
Unlike other producers, here the grape must is heated upon entry to the winery. This is a process known as 'a chaud'; imparting colour and flavour and slowing fermentation. Many see this as out of keeping with the concept that great wines result from careful vineyard management and minimal intervention. However the wines are fantastic and undeniably one of the most famous names in the appellation.
Doubtless the most sought after is the Hommage a Jacques Perrin, a super-cuvee strong on Mourvedre. There are also two whites: Chateau de Beaucastel Blanc (80% Rousanne & 20% Grenache Blanc) and Roussanne Vieilles Vignes - both are first rate and bottled under the Chateauneuf du Pape AC.
