Producer Information
Domaine Leflaive in Puligny Montrachet was the final stop of our millionaire's morning that also took in Domaine de Vogue and Domaine d'Eugenie. We were greeted by Queen Anne-Claude at the cellar door before beingquickly ushered in to the cuverie with her chief of staff Antoine. Tasting here is an enormous pleasure, the simple surroundings hiding the fact that the best white wine on the planet is hidden in those tall steel vats. Antoine climbs the ladder, dips in the pipette and we queue at the bottom with our glasses held out, patiently awaiting our fix. Ben compares the hushed silence to taking communion, lamenting that 'if only the wine was this good at All Saints in Mixbury. I'd go every week…'
Anne-Claude Leflaive oversees 21ha of vines in and around Puligny, along with her winemaker Pierre Morey. Led by the rare as hens' teeth Montrachet (0.08 ha yielding just one barrel or 25 cases), the estate's holdings includes four Grand Crus and Premier Crus. All the land was converted to biodynamics in the 1990s after a typically blunt and pragmatic comparison of biodynamic and non-biodynamic fruit carried out as an experiment by Anne-Claude. This lack of sentimentality, results-led approach is an articulate response to the critics of the practice - as are the intense, minerally-driven wines themselves, that whilst tight in their youth have an amazing capacity to age.
