Tasting Notes
"Reserved notes of crushed herbs, earth, dried flowers and a touch of the sauvage add interest to the fresh and cool red pinot fruit aromas that precede the round, pure and relatively supple flavors that possess a textured mouth feel and find complexity on the serious, frank and direct finish that displays some tanginess as well as a bit of dryness. It is not entirely clear that the dryness will age out so I prefer to remain cautious in my rating." 88pts, Burghound
Producer Information
Something of a legend in Burgundy; Henri Gouges (along with the Marquis d'Angerville) pioneered domaine bottling in Burgundy in the 1920s in response to widespread fraud and was instrumental in the establishment of France's appellation system. Whilst the domaine's fame may stem from Henri's actions over eighty years ago, his legacy is carried on by Christian and Pierre Gouges. Little new oak is used allowing, in Andrew Jefford's words, 'the roar of fruit so typical of Nuits' to shine through. There is also a small amount of white wine produced from an odd mutant clone of Pinot Noir discovered and propagated by Henri back in 1936!
