Tasting Notes
"This too is quite restrained with almost exclusively red berry fruit and intense floral aromas that are high-toned and pure while complementing the supple, textured, dusty and extremely precise flavors that exude a quiet power on the brooding and linear finish that delivers outstanding length. This will require every bit of a decade to resolve the very firm structure." Burghound. 90-93 Points.
Producer Information
Tasting here is always brilliant fun. Cerebral estate manager Jean-Luc Pepin regales us with his unique philosophical take on the vintage and we get to try three or four of the finest wines in Burgundy. The village wine includes the domaine' s declassified 1er Cru from their parcels in Les Baudes and Les Fuees, while the 1er Cru is actually made from the younger Musigny vines and is entitled to Grand Cru status. The prices may be among the highest on the Cote d'Or but in recent years the quality has been equally good. The house style is elegant and natural with intense purity of fruit - there is no excessive new oak or extraction around here.
One of the region's oldest domaines with a direct line back to the fifteenth century, Domaine Comte de Vogue own some of the most notable land in the Cote de Nuits including around three-quarters of the Grand Cru Musigny and a sizeable parcel of Bonnes Mares. The 1970s and early 1980s saw excessive use of fertilisers, driving yields up and quality down. The arrival of winemaker Francois Millet in 1985 restored the estate's reputation and the last two decades or so have seen de Vogue return to the elite of Burgundy producers. Among the rich, hedonistic reds, the Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru is made from declassified Grand Cru Musigny vines not considered old enough for inclusion in the Grand Cru. There is also an exceptional Bourgogne Blanc that is made from a handful of young Chardonnay vines planted in Musigny itself.
