Producer Information
Domaine de Chevalier lies in the northern part of Graves and forms part of the Pessac Leognan appellation. This area; which also is home to Chateau Haut Brion and Chateau La Mission Haut Brion is quite literally on the edge of the city of Bordeaux; on the battlefield between vineyards and suburbs. The property, shielded by pine trees, dates only back to the 18th Century. Although it is not grand (35 hectares), it is one of the few Graves estates to produce both first class reds and whites. The white wine accounts for only 20% of the production and is typically a blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon. The wine remains on the lees in cask for 18 months, making it the longest aged, dry white in Bordeaux.
The whites are widely considered to be greater than the reds, however the latter have seen great improvements in the last 10 years, and consist of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, the balance being 2.5% Cabernet Franc and 2.5% Petit Verdot. The grand vin goes under the name of Domaine de Chevalier, whether it be white or red. There are also second wines called L'Espirit de Chevalier. Recent vintages such as 2006 show the fabulous appeal that the white can offer, but there have been many other vintages of note, for the red as well. This is definitely a wine to buy with confidence; supported by its ranking as Grand Cru Classe de Graves in 1959.
