Tasting Notes
"A beauty in the elegant, restrained, finesse school of winemaking, the dark ruby/purple-colored 1995 Branaire exhibits a floral, cranberry, cherry, and black currant-scented nose intermixed with high quality toasty new oak. Medium-bodied, with excellent definition, supple tannin, and an attractive, alluring personality, this pleasant, measured yet complex wine should drink well young, and keep for two decades." 90 points, Robert Parker
Producer Information
The Branaire Ducru vineyards once formed part of the Chateau Beychevelle estate in the 17th Century. However Beychevelle was divided up and Chateau Branaire Ducru, along with Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, was born in the 1680s. The property, located in the St Julien commune, was ranked Fourth Growth in the 1855 classification of Bordeaux and is today owned by Patrick Maroteaux since 1988. There are 50 hectares in all, planted with 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and just 4% Petit Verdot, with an average age approaching 40 years, although there are many vines approaching a century! As with most Bordeaux estates, there is a second wine produced under the name Chateau Duluc. Under the direction of Maroteaux there is has been great improvement in recent years, this trend is continuing and Chateau Branaire Ducru is today a solid buy. The 2005 and 2006 are fitting testaments to the investment made, ranking the estate among the top in St Julien.
