Producer Information
Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande was originally owned by Marie-Laure-Virginie of the Pichon family, she acquired the status of Comtesse after marrying Comte Henri de Lalande in 1818. They resided in the estate's chateau located in Pauillac in the Medoc, which is reminiscent of fairy tale fantasies such is its beauty and architectural appeal.
The estate was sold to the Miailhe family in the late 1800s, it however retained its name and original Second Growth ranking from the 1855 Bordeaux classification. Quality has not diminished throughout the numerous changes until this day: the Rouzard family recently bought the estate from third generation May Eliane Miailhe; whose fabulous wines over the years are testament to her time ad efforts. The vines are 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot, spread over 75 hectares. Production also includes the second wine Reserve de la Comtesse.
For the last few decades the wines have been some of the most consistent in Bordeaux; the 1991 Pichon Lalande is a prime example of an excellent wine amongst what is generally considered to be an inferior vintage. Many hold the wines of this particular Pichon property in very high regard; it has long held a valid claim for the title of 'Super Second', alongside the likes of Chateau Leoville Las Cases and Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou. Very recent vintages, such as the 2003 and 2004, show that this level of premium quality has been maintained, producing elegant and refined clarets of the highest caliber.
