Tasting Notes
"This big, juicy, spicy Pomerol exhibits aromas and flavors of mulberries, raspberries, violets, licorice, and a touch of herbs. Made in a medium-bodied, upfront style, this round, seductive wine should drink well for 7-10 years." 89 pts, Robert Parker
Producer Information
Catherine Conseillan, originally a metal dealer from Libourne, established vineyards in Pomerol midway through the 18th Century. By 1756 she practiced active viticulture and the wine produced was christened La Conseillante. Conseillan took full control of the estate, thus securing its future as one of Pomerol's most important viticultural properties. We can assume she was also responsible for the construction of the chateau. There were changes of ownership after the estate's initial founding; today it is owned by the Nicolas family since 1874, assisted by manager Jean Michel Laporte.
The vineyards of Chateau La Conseillante lie on the very boundary between Pomerol and St Emilion, nearby neighbours include Chateau Cheval Blanc in St Emilion, and Pomerol thoroughbreds such as Vieux Chateau Certan, Petrus and Chateau L'Evangile. La Conseillnte is without doubt a leading estate in Pomerol. The label is alluring and memorable to many and the estate evokes femininity on multiple levels; the 'grand vin' is seductive and elegant in style with its blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec. The 2005 has all the substance and balance required to make it a truly great wine, but the 2003 is also delicious, and other vintages such as the 2004 are of very high quality indeed. A second wine, newly created in 2007, named Duo de Conseillante offers lower prices than the Pomerol top tiers.
