Producer Information
Chateau Batailley is the larger estate of neighbouring Chateau Haut-Batailley, the two estates having split in 1942 following previous owners Francois and Marcel Borie's decision to stave off future difficulties with inheritance by dividing up the land.
This property, which includes the chateau, is today run by the Casteja family in conjunction with Chateau Lynch Moussas. Its name comes from the Anglo-French battles that took place here during the 14th century; known, collectively, as the Hundred Years War. On the other hand, some say the estate is named after a local vigneron named Batailley, who was credited for planting the vineyards.
Chateau Batailley was ranked Cinquieme Grand Cru Classe (Fifth Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification of the Medoc. The vineyards are very much dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, as one might expect, this variety accounting for 70% of the plantings, the remainder being 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
Whilst being well situated in Pauillac near Latour, Batailley is also reasonably priced and crops up regularly in top wine lists. As stated by Jane MacQuitty of The Times: 'it effortlessly demonstrates elegant, cedary, beefy claret spice.' This wine is a steal for top quality red Bordeaux.
