Tasting Notes
Sweet, sticky, delicious wine with juicy apple, lime and honey fruit on the nose and palate. Perfectly balanced crisp acidity and slatey minerality add an element of seriousness to the finish, but the purity of the fruit is the hedonistic hero here.
Vinification Details.
The selected grapes are affected by noble rot (botrytis) which shrivels the grapes and concentrates the sugar, acidity and flavours within the grapes. These very ripe grapes must have an Oechsle of 110 ° to qualify as Beerenauslese (BA) under German law. Loosen's BA's are routinely harvested at around 120 ° Oechsle, giving them extra concentration and sweetness. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and stops naturally at a low alcohol owing to the overwhelming concentration of sugar in the must.
Producer Information
Ernst Loosen is a German winemaking hero, based in the Mosel, where he grows only Riesling. With plots in many of the region's most famous vineyards he makes fantastic wines that just scream fruit from the blue slate soils of these improbably steep slopes. His achievements were justly recognised by Decanter Magazine's decision to name him 'Man of the Year' in 2005.
Regional info.
The village of Bernkastel is in the heart of Germany's Mosel Valley region. The vineyards are characterised by their incredibly steep, south-facing slopes, mineral-rich slate soil and favorable position near the river. Excellent drainage and the heat-retaining quality of the rocky slate soil are also important factors in producing fully ripe, concentrated grapes.
