Tasting Notes
The Silver Bullet Gruner Veltliner comes in a novel 500ml bottle, which you don't see all that often, which seems a format well suited to lunch for two - not too much, but enough to get a glass and a bit.
It's also delicious (!), with white pepper and floral aromas on the nose complemented with a delicious zesty intense acidity which then develops into a lovely creamy smooth texture with a long lingering finish.
Vinification Details.
Laurenz V, Silver Bullet Grüner Veltliner 2008 Kamptal 16.5+ Drink 2010-2014
An experimental style of winemaking and one that seems to have worked well and might even be pushed further? Fermented on skins until 40% sugar has been converted to alcohol (instead of pressing the juice from the skins at the outset), giving depth and texture to the final wine.
Producer Information
Gruner Veltliner has effected a Cinderella-like transformation and now finds itself feted like a supermodel. This is thanks to the likes of Lenz Moser, who dreamt of bringing his beloved 'GV' to a wider audience. Everyone who's tasted the Charming and the Friendly GV has signed up for the fan club on the spot. Given these wines' remarkable ability to pair with every food under the sun from seafood to spice, there is absolutely no reason they shouldn't go to the ball.
Regional info.
The grapes for this delicious wine are grown in the Kamptal region of Austria. Here, the Gruner Veltliner ripens in granite, gneiss, mica-slate as well as loess soils. And from the neighbouring region to the north, the rugged Waldviertel blows cold air that substantially lowers night temperatures in the Kamptal; in this turn slows up the ripening process of the grapes. but these conditions are exactly why the wines from this region taste so fresh and fruity. The most beautiful kind of "cool climate viticulture."
