Tasting Notes

Rich yeasty aromas with hints of clean lime fruit on the nose. An exciting fine mousse and a creamy complexity on the palate. The wine ends with an elegant long finish.

Vinification Details.

Classic Champenoise methode: Whole bunch pressing ensures fractional recovery. Only the cuvee juice (premium juice = 500 litre per ton) is selected for fermentation. Of the cuvée, 50% is fermented in specific Piece Champenoise 205 litre barrels to ensure richness and extra dimension of flavour and creamy texture.

Only 7% new barrels are added each year to the balance of older barrels to ensure harmony during the fermentation. After fermentation the wine in barrels is selectively blended with other parcels of the best Chardonnay, that were fermented in stainless steel. The final blended base wine is then bottled for the second fermentation with yeast contact of at least 40 months before degorgement.

Producer Information

Graham Beck is a giant of the South African wine scene and has led the country's thundering success since the end of Apartheid in 1994, a year that saw Nelson Mandela toast his inauguration as President with a flute of Beck's Brut NV. Fizz remains a key part of the Beck portfolio and the sparkling wines are rightly recognised as among the best in the New World. Based in Robertson, a second cellar in Franschhoek has been built to further extend the company's potential. The talented team of Pieter 'Bubbles' Ferreira and Erika Obermeyer control the winemaking at the Franschhoek and Robertson wineries.

Regional info.

A 100% Chardonnay Methode cap classique made from grapes grown in Robertsons limestone soils. These vineyards have high natural lime content in the soil, which ensures a low pH and high natural acidity in the young base wines. Yield is between 8 to 10 ton/ha. Only the premium juice is selected for this wine, 50% of which was fermented in piece champenoise barrels to ensure richness and an added dimension of flavour. After blending this wood-matured wine with Chardonnay fermented in stainless steel, the wine was bottled for the second fermentation with yeast contacts for at least 36 months.

Dubbed the 'valley of vines and roses', the Robertson district's lime-rich soils make the area eminently suitable for racehorse stud farming and also, of course, winegrowing. Situated in the Breede River valley, the river is the lifeblood of this lower rainfall region. Although summer temperatures can be high, cooling south-easterly winds channel moisture-laden air into the valley.

Robertson is renowned for the quality of its wines and while traditionally considered white wine territory and known mainly for its Chardonnays and more recently for the quality of its Sauvignon Blanc, it is also the source of some of the Cape's finest red wines, particularly Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, while the distinctive fortified dessert wines for which it was originally famed continue to be produced. The district of Robertson incorporates several wards, including Bonnievale.
