Tasting Notes

This has pure density of fruit and green leaf characteritics on the nose, with a touch of coffee grounds, and a sweet, harmonious palate. Liquorice edged fruit, with soft, ripe tannins and moderate acidity. This is very pleasant indeed.

Vinification Details.

All the harvested grapes are sorted either in the vineyard, at the end of each row or on arrival at the winery.

Fermentation then takes place in thermoregulated concrete vats at around 28-30C with gentle pumping-overs for 20-30 days depending on the grape variety and vineyard provenance. Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels followed by a traditional maturation in barrel (of which 25% are new) for 14months. Egg white fining happens in vat before bottling at the Chateau in Sept 2003.

Regional info.

Chateau Peyrabon is a small cru bourgeois property in the Haut-Medoc that is owned by Patrick Bernard. It is a little unusual in that the vineyards are divided between the appellations of Haut-Medoc and Pauillac. The Haut-Medoc vineyard is a large one, being over 30 hectares in size, and it lies several miles inland from the Gironde. This location puts it a mile or so from the Pauillac commune boundary, with Chateau Liversan and Chateau Ramage la Batisse for neighbours. Half of the land is planted up with Cabernet Sauvignon, with about a quarter each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc and a tiny amount of Petit Verdot. The wine from the Haut-Medoc vineyard is sold as Chateau Peyrabon. The 5 hectare plot lying within the Pauillac commune is bottled separately and sold as Chateau la Fleur Peyrabon; and Chateau Pierbone is the second wine of Peyrabon.

Since it was bought by Bordeaux merchant Patrick Bernard in 1998, Peyrabon has benefited from serious investment to improve its quality and the recent results show how far the quality has soared. Grown on excellent gravelly terroir the wine is now definitely of top Cru Bourgeois standard. And exhibits a distinct touch of class.
