Tasting Notes
Vivid purple colour with abundant, jammy cherry and strawberry aromas. Soft, fresh and juicy on the palate, it has all the squishy fruit you could wish for.
Vinification Details.
The grapes are handpicked and then sorted and vatted in whole bunches (maceration carbonique). They are then bled to obtain better concentration. After that they are vinified with a long vatting of 9 to 12 days to draw out fruit and colour. No oak is used at any time.
Producer Information
Mommessin was delighted to pick up an IWC Great Value trophy for their Beaujolais Villages in 2006, and it is just reward for a winery that really over-delivers on the quality front. Positively steeped in Beaujolais, they produce wine from the region's 10 crus including the soft, almost feminine Brouilly and a wonderfully floral Fleurie with a Burgundian Pinot Noir-like character. The quality of the winemaking is impeccable too, as you would expect from the owners of Burgundy's fabled Clos de Tart.
Regional info.
A clear step up from basic Beaujolais, Villages wines are still light, with the same pear-drop hint to the juicy red fruit, but are richer with more personality; they are well worth paying a little bit extra for.
Beaujolais Villages is located in the central/northwest part of the greater Beaujolais region on the foothills of the Massif Central. This area covers some 38 communes and accounts for about a quarter of the total annual Beaujolais production and is the second most important appellation in terms of both quantity and quality.
A hilly terrain and schist/granite, sandy soils lend the potential for better quality wines than the larger Beaujolais region in general.
The grapes for this Beaujolais-Villages are sourced from selected plots of vines spread over slopes and plateaux of the commune of Montmelas, Saint-Etienne la Varenne, Lantignie and Blace, in the superior, nothern part of Beaujolais. The plots are situated at an altitude of 300 metres. The vines of more than 40 years in age, some going up to 80 years, contribute to the richness and complexity of the aromas.
