Tasting Notes
The 2009 Gigondas is concentrated, with good structure and great tannins that will guarantee long ageing. Characteristics of mint, lavender, gingerbread, blackberry, violet and pepper, are all very prominent and held together with this underlying balance and acidity.
Vinification Details.
Aged for twelve months, with 70% in one to four year old barrels, and 30% in concrete vats. The Gigondas is bottled without filtration.
2009 will remain forever as the year with the very bad hail. Very unusual in the micro-climate around St Cosme it destroyed 70% of the buds at the beginning of spring, resulting in the smallest crop ever at Saint Cosme. One good thing to result form these bad conditions is the grapes didn't suffer from the 2009 draught, thanks to the low yields.
Producer Information
We have been buying wines from St Cosme for around 10 years for our Rhone En Primeur campaign. One of the most celebrated wineries in the Rhone (indeed the whole of France) they have always been a big hit with our customers. The winery dates back to 1490 and they have some of the oldest vines in the Southern Rhone. In 2007 this already highly rated winery hit a new level with Parker gracing them with a very rare perfect 100 point score. They are now a truly Iconic producer but what makes them so admirable is that Louis Barruol (owner and winemaker) treats all the wines with the same care, technical precision and artistry so whether you are drinking the basic Cotes du Rhone or Gigondas 'Hominis Fides', you are in for a vinous treat. To our mind these are the best wines in Gigondas displaying aromatic fireworks you just don't get anywhere else in the Rhone.
Regional info.
In the heart of the appellation Gigondas, the Château de Saint Cosme is an exceptional estate, with its Gallo-Roman fermentation vats perfectly preserved. This fantastic historical site gives a good idea how its ancesters the gallo-romans were living. The property has been in the family since 1490, with14 generations of vignerons. St Cosme has 15 hectares of old vines (average 60 years old) with a yield of around 27Hos/Ha.The soil here consists of clay (ancient alluvial deposit), limestony marl and stones. Saint Cosme is exceptionally located at the crossing of two geological faults, which is very rare. This gives an extraordinary diversity of soils, and also it experiences its own microclimate which is cool and late ripening. The Saint Cosme's Chapel, located in the heart of the vineyard is a great preserved example of roman art. It was built in the XI and XII century.
