This wine is full bodied and complex, with a great ability to age. Rich flavours of strawberry and gingerbread can be found, as well as prominent earthy characteristics, as well as rustic Rhone tannins.
Vinification Details.
The grapes recieve six weeks maceration, before ageing in wooden and concrete vats. Co-fermentation is a very important tradition at Saint Cosme. According to the winemakersd at St Cosme, Les Deux Albion brings the proof that co-fermentation is great process, Syrah fermented with Clairette always giving a stunning result.
Producer Information
We have been buying wines from St Cosme for around 10 years for our Rhone En Primeur campaign. One of the most celebrated wineries in the Rhone (indeed the whole of France) they have always been a big hit with our customers. The winery dates back to 1490 and they have some of the oldest vines in the Southern Rhone. In 2007 this already highly rated winery hit a new level with Parker gracing them with a very rare perfect 100 point score. They are now a truly Iconic producer but what makes them so admirable is that Louis Barruol (owner and winemaker) treats all the wines with the same care, technical precision and artistry so whether you are drinking the basic Cotes du Rhone or Gigondas 'Hominis Fides', you are in for a vinous treat. To our mind these are the best wines in Gigondas displaying aromatic fireworks you just don't get anywhere else in the Rhone.
Regional info.
In the heart of the appellation Gigondas, the Château de Saint Cosme is an exceptional estate, with its Gallo-Roman fermentation vats perfectly preserved. This fantastic historical site gives a good idea how its ancesters the gallo-romans were living. The property has been in the family since 1490, with14 generations of vignerons. St Cosme has 15 hectares of old vines (average 60 years old) with a yield of around 27Hos/Ha.The soil here consists of clay (ancient alluvial deposit), limestony marl and stones. Saint Cosme is exceptionally located at the crossing of two geological faults, which is very rare. This gives an extraordinary diversity of soils, and also it experiences its own microclimate which is cool and late ripening. The Saint Cosme's Chapel, located in the heart of the vineyard is a great preserved example of roman art. It was built in the XI and XII century.
