Tasting Notes
This wine is still one of the few really outstanding wines from Crozes-Hermitage. Made from vines planted a stone's throw from the Hill of Hermitage it is succulent, juicy and crunchy Syrah with lovely smoky, brambly fruit. Fleshy and ripe palate with silky tannins and excellent freshness and purity.
Vinification Details.
The grapes are crushed, destemmed and fermented on their skins in stainless steel & cement tanks. After fermentation around 50% of the blend is aged in large, old 600 litre demi-muid casks. No new oak is used.
Producer Information
Up until the 1993 vintage the Viale family sold their entire crop to negociants, including Guigal, no doubt enhancing blends across the region but denying the world a chance to taste their fantastic terroirs. The Crozes-Hermitage wines are sourced from vines adjacent to the Hermitage appellation (Colombier are the only Crozes producer in the commune of Tain) and are beacons of quality in an appellation bedeviled by inconsistency. The Hermitage proper truly deserves that most overused and misused epithet 'fine wine'. In his excellent book 'The New France', Andrew Jefford described the wines thus: "pure fruit perfumes lick from them like flames from a bonfire, while the wines themselves are vivid and quenching."
Regional info.
