Tasting Notes

Dry, refreshing rose with crisp red berry fruit on the nose and palate - cranberries, redcurrants and raspberries all mixed with a slightly wilder touch of earthy Pinot Noir character. A classic Sancerre rose from a great vintage.

Vinification Details.

The rose is obtained by the saignee method in which the grapes are left in contact with the skins for 24 hours to allow the pink colour to be printed on the juice. After the fermentation, the wine is racked off the gross lees and is aged on its fine lees until January-February

Producer Information

A family owned firm that places a distinct emphasis on tradition and quality, but with a welcome move towards screwcaps from the excellent 2005 vintage onwards the company is also looking forward and embracing the twenty-first century. Given the fresh, crisp, aromatic style of the wines, bottling them under the twisting top makes perfect sense.

Regional info.

Eric Louis estate was founded by his great-great-grandmother Pauline, who established the family's reputation for quality wines all the way back in the 1860's. The domaine is located just outside the village of Thauvenay, one of Sancerre's 14 communes in the southeast section of the appellation. Sancerre rose is rare, making up only 5% of the appellation's wines.

Though avoiding the bureacratic headaches associated with certification, Eric tends his vines organically, limits yields, and schedules pruning, ploughing and picking according to lunar cycles.
