Tasting Notes

Robert Parker

Score: 90-92 / 100

2010: An undeniable sleeper of the vintage, this may be the finest Poujeaux I have tasted in three decades. A crushed rock/mineral character is intertwined with abundant black currant, blackberry, incense and camphor notes in this full-bodied, unctuously textured, elegant, pure effort. It is capable of lasting 15 years. Kudos to new proprietor Philippe Cuvelier (also the owner of St.-Emilion's Clos Fourtet) for resurrecting this well-known estate.

Jancis Robinson

Score: 16.5 / 20

Particularly deep purple. Very, very rich. Taken right to the limit of ripeness. Yet there is freshness here too and the tannins, while a little drying, are not excessively painful. This is a very intense ambassador for 2010

Wine Spectator

Score: 88-91 / 100

Feels a little soft on the edges, but the core of plum, raspberry and fig character is persistent, and there's a nice tobacco edge on the finish, which picks up some grip.

Bibendum

Score: 17 / 20

The star of the Medoc UGC, Poujeaux has excelled this year. Very elegant and bright with soft, ripe fruit pegged back by super-fine tannins. Very open and accessible but with sufficient rigour to age well too.

James Suckling

Score: 92-93 / 100

Love the fruity and chocolate character here, with lots spices and nutmeg. Full and velvety with soft tannins and a long finish.

Producer Information

As one of the leading wines of the Moulis, situated between Margaux and Saint-Julien, Chateau Poujeaux also benefits from the Gunzian gravel that surrounds much of the Medoc. 16th century records show it was owned by Gaston de L'Isle, then owner of Chateau Latour, and in recent years its consistency has marked it as one of the best two in the appellation, alongside Chateau Chasse-Spleen.
