Tasting Notes
Robert Parker
Score: 91-94 / 100 Robert Parker2010 Carruades de Lafite: Composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest mostly Merlot and a dollop of Cabernet Franc, the beautiful 2010 Carruades de Lafite may turn out to be one of the finest yet produced (although I still have a weakness for the brilliant 2003, which is drinking beautifully at present). Notes of charcoal, black currants, sweet cherries, licorice, herbs and cedar are all present in this full-bodied, opulent, stunning second wine. It will be drinkable upon release and should last for 20 or more years.
Jancis Robinson
Score: 17.5 / 2050% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. Mid crimson without great colour intensity. Very savoury and glossy. Immediate polish on the nose here. Raspberries and tar. Great intensity and fluidity. Really this is SO much better than it used to be. Very fine wine by any measure. Bone dry. Minerals and chew on the end but no rustic tannins. Very fine and long. It is admirable that Charles Chevalier puts so much effort into this wine which, although admittedly it is expensive, could be sold several times over in China whatever it tasted like.
Wine Spectator
Score: 93-96 / 100Remarkably tight, offering black currant and sanguine notes laced with sandalwood and roasted fig. This is also tight-grained on the finish and is really long, with the acidity just going on and on. Only 10 percent new oak.
Bibendum
Score: 16.5 / 20The Carruades phenomenon in the Far East has made this an investor's wine rather than a drinker's. What it tastes like seems almost irrelevant these days, but for the record it is ripe and fruity with lovely, silky bramble fruit and soft, supple tannins. The finish is just a little dry but the overall package is very good indeed.
James Suckling
Score: 95-96 / 100Incredible smoke, currants and blackberries. Spices too. Full bodied, with ultra-polished tannins and blackberries, blueberries and minerals. Orange peel too. Best Carruades ever.
Producer Information
Carruades de Lafite is a fantastic wine, and one that won't reduce your cash balance to nothing! It also has the added advantage of being enjoyable to drink now; with a silky, elegant and complex palate, harnessed very nicely by a slab of acidity and fine tannins. On the nose it is perfumed, with tropical hints.
As part of Chateau Lafite Rothschild, the wine is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, but also with a large proportion of Merlot (around 40-50%), and small quantities of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate is located in Pauillac on the left bank in Bordeaux. The wine will age for 10 - 15 years, and is comfortably of 2nd or 3rd Growth quality.
Second wines offer great value for money; their quality far outweighs the price and this is without doubt a great opportunity to experience wines made by the greatest wine estates in the world. Chateau Lafite's ruthless selection of grapes has meant that many vines that could easily provide fruit for the grand vin are now allocated to make the Carruades. This is a fine claret of tremendous purity which reflects Lafite's tell-tale elegance.
