Tasting Notes
Robert Parker
Score: 85-87 / 100 Robert Parker2010: From Alain Vauthier, the proprietor of Ausone, Fonbel's 2010 reveals surprisingly high acidity as well as a more narrow constitution than expected given the winemaking team responsible for its production. It exhibits a dense ruby/purple color along with some minerality and red and black fruits, but it seems monolithic compared to its peers. Drink it during its first 10-12 years of life.
Jancis Robinson
Score: 16 / 20Sister of Ausone. Dark cherry red. Very rich nose. Then thick and flattering. A bit sweeter than one associates with a premier grand cru. Then a little bit dry but not forced.
Wine Spectator
Score: 88-91 / 100Taut with briar and blackberry flavors, this shows sappy black cherry on the finish, with buried minerality.
Bibendum
Score: 16.5 / 2066% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 7% Carmenere. Quite open and fresh with good depth and just a tinge of smoke alongside the cherry compote fruit. Sweet and rich on the finish. Will be very good value.
James Suckling
Score: 91-92 / 100Bright and fruity with a lovely purity of cherries and berries, minerals and firm tannins. Lively acidity. The 7 percent Carmén?re gives this a lively and unique style.
Producer Information
Chateau de Fonbel is a very fine and elegant Grand Cru Classe from St Emilion, Bordeaux. Its prices are relatively low for a cru classe making it a real bargain considering it is owned and managed by Alain Vautier of nearby Chateau Ausone - whose wine-making abilities seem to be unrivalled on the Right Bank.
The estate is consistently well maintained, ensuring quality and age potential; the wine is complex whilst boasting charming black fruit characteristics; make this an attractive and classy wine definitely worthy of its top classification within the St Emilion appellation. The blend is predominantly Merlot creating the trademark soft and silky texture, framed by notes of leather and oak this is a delicious wine hard to resist!
