Score: 18 / 20From 30-year-old vines, this has a complex nose of dark cherry, coffee, and minerals. Powerful with firm, tight tannins and a delicious savoury character. Lots of potential.
Producer Information
The Chave family have been making wine in the Northern Rhone since the 15th Century. This legendary family business is today run by Jean Louis Chave who is, without doubt best known for his production of red and white Hermitage - frequently regarded as the top wine in this tiny village appellation, in which production is extremely low and prices sky high. Demand for the wines is huge; and critics such as Robert Parker regularly awards them scores in the high 90s. Roughly 25% of Chave's Hermitage vineyards are planted with the white wine varieties of Roussanne and Marsanne, and 45% are Syrah - the single grape of red Hermitage. He also makes the red 'Offerus' St Joseph, which again is one of the finest examples in its appellation: classic Syrah, powerful and rich with lots of berry fruit, a stunning perfume and a heady finish.
