Tasting Notes
Robert Parker
Score: 91-93 / 100 Robert Parker2010: A quintessentially elegant style of Bordeaux, the opaque ruby/purple-tinged 2010 Cantemerle possesses elegant floral notes intermixed with hints of blueberries, raspberries, sweet red cherries and currants. Medium-bodied with impressive purity, concentration and texture, it is not a heavyweight, but rather a well-proportioned, stylish red that should drink nicely for 15-20 years.
Jancis Robinson
Score: 16 / 20Lower yields in general than 2009 but they almost reached the maximum allowed because of their high density. 53 hl/ha. Very dark purple. Big and raw and blustering. Quite a bruiser! Very sweet and lively and classy with marked mulberry fruit. Very powerful with masses of tannins hidden away underneath too. Well-integrated nose with both concentration and vivacity. Nicely balanced and behaved even without real nerve. Just a little stolid on the finish. Tasted both open and blind.
Bibendum
Score: 16.5 / 20Lots of inviting fruit on the nose but lighter on the palate with ripe blackberry fruit and grainy tannins on the finish. Impressively long with persistent fruit.
James Suckling
Score: 93-94 / 100Layered and rich with lots of blueberry character and ripe velvety tannins. Lovely texture. Best wine from here in years.
Producer Information
Chateau Cantemerle offers a combination of good quality; in keeping with its Fifth Growth (Cinquieme Grand Cru Classe) ranking in the 1855 Medoc Classification, and good value. Some are even of the opinion that it should be upgraded - as the legendary Bordeaux classification was based only on the selling price of the wines at the time.
This 87 hectare estate in the Haut-Medoc region is planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the remainder Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. These are the grape varieties of red Bordeaux, with the finest examples providing decades of drinking pleasure!
Cantemerle also produces a second wine called Les Allees des Cantemerle, whilst the grand vin goes through a process called 'selective devatting'; where only the middle section of the vatted grape juice is pressed - this is unique to Chateau Cantermerle, resulting in a purer wine, completed separated from unwanted grape matter. In style this is known as a vibrant claret; showing plenty of spice and black fruit characteristics, with supple tannins and a soft texture. Cantemerle is a Grand Cru Bordeaux at an affordable price, making it a big seller every year.
