Tasting Notes
Robert Parker
Score: 92-94 Robert Parker"This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with the Cabernet dominating, looks to be the best they have ever produced, even eclipsing the 2005. Dense purple in color, with extraordinarily elegant floral notes intermixed with raspberry, black currant, cherry, and spice box, it is medium to full-bodied, not massive, but again, very seamless, with beautiful precision, sweet tannins, and an endearing fleshiness and depth of flavor that are neither heavy nor fatiguing. This wine will be relatively approachable in 3-5 years and drink well for 25-30."
Jancis Robinson
Score: 15.5 Points"Very dark. Polished nose. But then pretty green on the finish. Nice attempt but just not quite ripe enough. Just a bit too austere. Drink 2015-2025"
Wine Spectator
Score: 88-91 PointsVery pretty and aromatic on the nose, with currant and flowers. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a clean finish. JS.
Bibendum
Score: 16.5 PointsWe had hoped that the Moulis, Listrac and Medoc tasting would be an Aladdin's cave of veritable bargain 2009s. It wasn't; too many of the wines were over-extracted and over-oaked. Cantemerle was one of the wines that bucked that trend, producing a plush, inviting wine featuring fine tannins that frame generous red berry fruit. Very natural and understated, it is definitely one to watch. Drink from 2015.
Producer Information
Chateau Cantemerle offers a combination of good quality; in keeping with its Fifth Growth (Cinquieme Grand Cru Classe) ranking in the 1855 Medoc Classification, and good value. Some are even of the opinion that it should be upgraded - as the legendary Bordeaux classification was based only on the selling price of the wines at the time.
This 87 hectare estate in the Haut-Medoc region is planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the remainder Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. These are the grape varieties of red Bordeaux, with the finest examples providing decades of drinking pleasure!
Cantemerle also produces a second wine called Les Allees des Cantemerle, whilst the grand vin goes through a process called 'selective devatting'; where only the middle section of the vatted grape juice is pressed - this is unique to Chateau Cantermerle, resulting in a purer wine, completed separated from unwanted grape matter. In style this is known as a vibrant claret; showing plenty of spice and black fruit characteristics, with supple tannins and a soft texture. Cantemerle is a Grand Cru Bordeaux at an affordable price, making it a big seller every year.
