Tasting Notes

Robert Parker

Score: 94 / 100

"The luxury cuvee, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Vieilles Vignes (Roussanne) (100% Roussanne aged in one-year-old barrels as well as new oak that no longer undergoes malolactic fermentation) is a prodigious dry white. A luxurious amount of rose water notes intermixed with honeysuckle, pineapple, nectarine, peach and subtle smoke emerge from this beauty. It possesses a terrific texture, zesty acids, an unmistakable minerality and a sumptuous personality."

Bibendum

Score: 18 / 20

From 90 year old Roussanne vines, the perfume makes a remarkable impact with pear fruit, china tea and musk. At first the palate is restrained but there is plenty of depth with flavours developing over a very long finish.

Producer Information

Chateau de Beaucastel forms part of the great Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation in the Southern Rhone region of France. Beaucastel is famed as the only Chateau to use all 13 different grape varieties that are permitted under the rules of the appellation. The signature grape however is Mourvedre, used in equal measures with Grenache.

Unlike other producers, here the grape must is heated upon entry to the winery. This is a process known as 'a chaud'; imparting colour and flavour and slowing fermentation. Many see this as out of keeping with the concept that great wines result from careful vineyard management and minimal intervention. However the wines are fantastic and undeniably one of the most famous names in the appellation.

Doubtless the most sought after is the Hommage a Jacques Perrin, a super-cuvee strong on Mourvedre. There are also two whites: Chateau de Beaucastel Blanc (80% Rousanne & 20% Grenache Blanc) and Roussanne Vieilles Vignes - both are first rate and bottled under the Chateauneuf du Pape AC.
