Score: 17/20An immediately appealing wine with bright cherry, strawberry and plum fruit on the nose. There is an attractive mineral note on the long finish with a hint of spice.
Producer Information
Pascal Lachaux is one of several Burgundian winemakers who came to their vocation by accident. A former pharmacist with an interest in homeopathy, Pascal married Robert Arnoux's daughter and was persuaded to join the family firm. Since taking the reins, Pascal has introduced biodynamics, lowered yields, abandoned fining and filtration and upped the use of new oak. The Grand Crus receive 100% new oak, the Premier Crus around two-thirds with the village wines seeing around a third. Significantly however, the wines have the concentration, depth and power to cope.
The standout feature of Pascal's domaine wines this year was the lift and freshness each of them seemed to have on the finish, "Une bonne vivacite" in Pascal's words. These wines consistently deliver with more than enough weight and concentration of fruit to absorb the oak. They are plush and luxurious but never lose the soul of the terroirs or become simple fruit bombs. Balance and structure remain Pascal's preoccupations and he has done exceedingly well in 2007.
