Tasting Notes
"Very slightly paler than the Esclans, but all of these are a pale to mid-salmon colour. Intense, very concentrated aroma with the richness and warmth of old Grenache on the front palate and a bit of Vermentino/Rolle lift on the finish. Nice wine, though I wouldn't pay twice as much as for Esclans. Still quite Chewy on the finish". Jancis Robinson
Vinification Details.
Harvesting from sunrise to noon by hand only and in small crates to avoid oxidation. Grapes (48% comes from 80 year old Grenache vineyards) are then sorted electronically and manually 3 times. Destemming and slight crushing at 7-8 °C to avoid coloration. Both the free run (90%) and pressed juices (10%) are fermented in new and 1 year old demi muids (600L barrels) for 10 months with temperature control and batonnage twice weekly.
Producer Information
Chateau d'Esclans is found nestled in the depths of Provence about half an hour north of St Tropez. New to Bibendum's list, these Rose wines come recommended highly by Jancis Robinson, "the best pink wine to have come my way". www.jancisrobinson.com
Now owned by Sacha Lichine, this Rose is renowned as one of the most stylish, elegant roses the wine world has to offer. A must have in every fashionable watering hole in the Cote d'Azur, this is something to get out around your friends and enjoy!
Regional info.
Ch d'Esclans is fast on its way to becoming the most desirable Rose in the World. Sacha (son of Alexis Lichine, ex Château Prieuré-Lichine in Margaux) and his winemaker (Patrick Leon ex-winemaker for Mouton Rothschild) started in 2006 to make wine at this beautiful estate near Frejus in Provence. Their goal is simple, to make the most elegant and complex Rose in the world. They have quickly taken the place of Domaine Ott in the Cote d'Azur with the Jet Set due to their incredibly sexy packaging and lighter, less austere style.
