Tasting Notes

Rich, golden hue, with a nose of honey and hazelnuts. Beautifully balanced palate bursting with candied fruit and brioche flavours.

Vinification Details.

Hand harvested. The grapes are vinified with their skins. 60% of the juice is pressed and aged in barrels under the “solera” system, which adds complexity to the wine. The barrels used are over 30 years old. Another 35% of the juice stays in concrete tank, away from natural air. This adds great fruity character to the wine. Last but not least, the remaining 5% is aged outside, in demi-john glass bottles, bringing a little bitterness to the wine and giving it its caramel colour.

Producer Information

Launched in 2008 to great acclaim, the Els Pyreneus range throws away the old political borders to unite some of the most excitng terroirs on both the French and Spanish sides of the Pyrenees. The wines are made by top winemaker Jean Marc Lafage and are sourced from old vines in Roussillon, Emporda and Calatayud. Despite the wines all reflecting their individual terroirs, they are linked by a fantastic intensity of fruit and minerality that marks them out from the crowd.

Regional info.

Muscat de Rivesaltes and Rivesaltes cover much of Roussillon. The 2 appellations have distinct styles, although both are Vins Doux Naturels, sweet wines made using mutage. The most obvious difference is that the latter comes mainly from Grenache and is aged oxidatively in wood for at least 2 years.
