Tasting Notes

Classic tawny-brown colour with rich nutty, dried fruit aromas and luscious, sweet, raisin, mocha chocolate, spice and medjool date flavours on the palate.

Vinification Details.

The grapes are harvested and crushed quickly with a fast, warm maceration to extract maximum colour, flavour and tannin from the grape skins before the half-fermented wine is fortifed with grape spirit. This fortification ends the fermentation process, leaving natural unfermented sugars in the wine. The wine is aged for many years in large old wooden casks.

Producer Information

This eighteenth century Douro wine estate is actually one of the most modern-looking in Portugal. Although the team uses the traditional panoply of indigenous grapes, their methods are bang up to date and the results nothing short of sensational. Unusually for the region, Vallado's priority is making table wines rather than Port, although their 10 year old Tawny is a superb partner for everything from ripe Stilton to ginger cake. The success of this approach has been borne out by the spicy, rich Tinto Reserva walking off with a host of trophies in its last two vintages at both the IWC and Decanter awards.
