Producer Information
Today, Fonseca occupies a leading position as a specialist producer of quality ports and as one of the top vintage houses. Founded in 1822 by Manoel Pedro Guimaraens, by 1840, the firm had become the second largest shipper of Port Wine and in 1847 the first Fonseca vintage port was shipped to England. In 1948, the difficulties of the war years led to a consolidation of ownership of Fonseca Guimaraens with Taylor, Fladgate and Yeatman. Consistency of style has remained one of the fundamental principles of the Fonseca philosophy since its founding. The firm has traditionally purchased wines from the same growers whose operations have been under its control.
Since its foundation, successive generations of the Guimaraens family have upheld the Company's reputation. The founder's great-great-grandson, Bruce Duncan Guimaraens supervised the Company's extensive vineyards in the Upper Douro from 1955 -1995. His son, David, currently acts as the winemaker and is responsible for the considerable stocks of ageing port wine in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Regional info.
Vintage character is descriptive of a type of Port blended from high quality reserve wines from a range of vintages, which, similar to late bottled vintage Port, shows some of the characteristics of true vintage Port. Most vintage character Ports, which have only become widely commercialized since the 1950s~ carry a brand name and vary widely in style from house to house.
