Tasting Notes

Chilcas Reserva Chardonnay 2009 is a golden yellow color, with silver tones and green highlights. This Chardonnay Reserva stands out with its pear and tropical fruit aromas, accompanied by subtle touches of toast, honey, and a soft mineral note. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with good viscosity and pleasant structure and refreshing acidity.

Vinification Details.

The grapes are handpicked in the early morning during the third week of March and immediately transported to the cellar, where they are inspected on a selection table and then destemmed. Before pressing, 20% of the fruit is macerated at 46 °F - 50 ºF for 6 to 12 hours to extract the variety's full aromatic intensity. 100% is fermented in stainless steel tanks for 14-16 days under strict temperature control 57 ºF - 61 ºF to preserve aromatic intensity. After alcoholic fermentation, 40% of the wine is barrel-aged for 8 months. The wine is stabilized for 15-20 days at 39 ºF and then earth-filtered before being bottled.

Producer Information

Chilcas manages vineyards throughout all the major wine valleys in Chile, allowing it to grow and select only the best grapes from the most compatible terroirs. 38 hectares are officially classified as organic - a status achieved through adhering to strict regulations, not using synthetic pesticides or easily soluble fertilizers, and a genuine love of the land.

The arrival of new winemaker Rafael Tirado means the care and attention in the vineyards is carried through to the winemaking process, ensuring the creation of individual wines. The results are vineyards with rich biodiversity and wines with true regional expression.

Regional info.

The Chilcas Reserva Chardonnay 2009 comes from the Maule Valley, 162 miles south of the capital city of Santiago. The valley is very geographically diverse, having a Mediterranean climate with well-defined seasons, including a warm, dry summer with a significant daytime-night time temperature variation and a cold, rainy winter. Average annual precipitation in the valley is 26 in -28 in, most of which falls in winter, which leads to more concentrated wines. The lack of rainfall after the winter enables better control of plant vigor, keeps the grape berries small, and helps the bunches ripen uniformly. The Chardonnay used for this blend comes from 8-year old vines in the “La Esperanza” sector of Las Chilcas estate, vertically trained, spaced 1.5 x 2.2m apart, and drip irrigated. In regard to canopy management, a partial defoliation was carried out that allowed for morning sun exposure of 60% of fruit. Cluster thinning was also carried out to regulate the fruit load. Yield was 8-9 tons per hectare.
