Tasting Notes
Concentrated aromas with abundance of ripe black cherries, plum & sweet spice. Lively wine with ripe berry flavors complimented by hints of black tea & exotic spice. Richly textured & well balanced.
Vinification Details.
Hand harvested, 50% fermented whole cluster, the remaining were destemmed prior to fermentation. Fermented with native yeasts in open top fermenters. After 14 days the wines were pressed & moved by gravity to oak barrels, mostly Francois Freres barrels, 10% new, for 11 months. Bottled unfiltered.
Producer Information
The man with the studded suit jacket, Josh Jensen is a Californian wine legend. An Oxford rowing blue and confirmed Burgundy-phile, Josh scoured California looking for a limestone-rich cool climate site in which to recreate the Cote d'Or. It took him two years to find it but in 1974 Josh stumbled across Mount Harlan, 90 miles south of San Francisco. He planted his first Pinot Noir and Chardonnay a year later. More than three decades on, Calera is recognized as one of California's very best producers for these grapes. As Robert Parker says Calera is "one of the most compelling Pinot Noir specialists not only in the new world, but on Planet Earth."
Regional info.
Cool wet weather in the spring of 2006 led to a late start to the growing season. However, warm temperatures in July and August allowed the fruit to fully ripen just a few weeks later than normal.
