Tasting Notes

This is a Wither Hills single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc well worth singling out. It is an example of how a microclimate of soil and sun, and the interaction with man can create a wine of classically ripe herbal, gooseberry, and citrus aromatics. With a dry mineral palate full of ripe melon, tropical fruit layers, with intensity and

texture supported by an elegant and refined acidity.

Vinification Details.

The wine was picked on flavour and acid balance, then fermented in stainless steel under low temperatures to retain the delicate aromatics and fruit flavours. The wine relaxed on light lees in tank for 6 months to enhance the palate and texture before being fined filtered and bottled in November.

Producer Information

Wither Hills was founded in the 1990s, and quickly built up a fantastic reputation, based on its production of just three wines: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The estate has grown in size and stature and is now regarded as one of the finest Marlborough estates. Chief Winemaker Ben Glover oversees a top team of dedicated wine fanatics.

Regional info.

Wither Hills winery lies in the shadow of the majestic Wither Hills, part of Marlborough's Southern landmark range.

Established in 1994, with vineyards strategically sited throughout Marlborough's Wairau Valley, Wither Hills has always been dedicated to the philosophy that the best wines are ‘created in the vineyard'.

Through our hands on approach and meticulous attention to detail in the vineyards and winery they craft a focused range of wines - Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris & Pinot Noir.

The Rarangi vineyard, situated on the North Eastern tip of Marlborough's Wairau Valley is totally unique; as is the remarkable wine it produces. A Wither Hills wine deservedly singled out. Planted in 2002, this vineyard lies below the coastal foothills of the Richmond Ranges. It offers a unique microclimate for wine growing with the soil type being a combination of what was coastal waters edge and natural wetland waterways. Over the centuries this has slowly been uplifted by the movement of tectonic plates that form the fault line running up the east coast of New Zealand. Part of the vineyard is planted around what is now some of the best preserved native wetlands in the region. It is an extremely warm site moderated by the cooling easterly wind. This influence creates layers of ripe herbal, melon and tropical fruit characters, yet with the pungent intensity of gooseberry, lemongrass and citrus aromatics.
