Tasting Notes
A wonderfully brooding wine with depths of darkness in both appearance and taste. A floral streak gives the wine some prettiness in what would otherwise be a fairly dark exercise. This promise of density gives way to a plumy richness on the palate. As a relatively big boned wine, balance come through sinewy tannins rather than acidity.
Vinification Details.
Individual parcels of fruit were picked on successive cool mornings. The grapes were tipped directly into five tonne open fermenters, given a five day cold soak and allowed to warm up and ferment spontaneously with native vineyard yeasts. The young wine was then drawn off the skins and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. The parcels of fruit were then blended and bottled.
Regional info.
Te Awa occupies a prime position in the Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District, one of the premium Hawkes Bay wine growing sites. Warm temperatures, low rainfall and the permeability of the soils creates an almost paradoxical blend of consistency and complexity.
The region has produced some of New Zealand's most sought after Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay
