Tasting Notes
Riesling grapes are carefully selected from the best vines in our Marlborough vineyard, gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks to give intense floral and citrus characters. The wine is fruit-driven in style, elegant and delicate. The bouquet is typically intense fresh lime, green apple and floral aromas. The palate is vibrant and elegant with racy acid in a medium-dry style.
Vinification Details.
After picking each vineyard parcel was slowly fermented with selected yeast strains. The wines were settled clear and aged on light yeast lees for 2 months prior to blending and bottling.
Producer Information
Named after the satellite listening post located over the road from the winery, Spy Valley is in the Waihopai Valley in Marlborough. Happily for us they appear more interested in fine wine than exploding cigars, and recent vintages have seen the winery's trophy cabinet filled to bursting. Like most Marlborough wineries, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc are Spy Valley specialties but winemaker Ant Mackenzie and his team also make a great range of aromatic whites including Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris. Their quality was recognised in March 2007 when the winery became the first ever producer to win four trophies in the same year at the Sydney Wine Show.
Regional info.
Spy Valley Wines is situated on the sunny southern side of Marlborough's Wairau Valley. Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993, and were pioneers in what was then a Marlborough sub-region.
From vintage 2000, wine was produced and sold under the Spy Valley label. The unusual name is derived from the presence of a huge satellite communications monitoring station nearby; hence the nickname Spy Valley!
