Vibrant plum red with purple hues which has become the trademark of this youthful exuberant wine. Highly floral with lively dark cherry and violets. A spicy rose petal-like infusion from the Touriga Nacional combines to complete the sensory experience. New world vibrant array of red berry fruits and spice with an underlying old world European earthiness. Finishing with soft, yet assertive tannins. A lush wine filled with Barossa sunshine.
Vinification Details.
This is an unoaked wine that is fermented in stainless steel tanks with yeast strains which are especially selected to highlight the fresh berry, floral, spicy, earthy aromas contributed by the Grenache and Touriga, and use the richness and pepper spice of the Shiraz to build up palate weight and structure.
Producer Information
This great Barossa winery goes from strength to strength. Toby Barlow, fresh from his stunning successes at Mitchelton in Victoria, has taken over where Matt Gant left off, and ensures that St Hallett remains one of the most forward looking wineries in Australia. It isn't just Shiraz that rocks their world, and the Poacher's Blend white (the first vintage was made from grapes 'stolen' in lieu of an unpaid bill!) is as racy and fresh as anything in Australia.
Regional info.
The Barossa region takes its name from the Spanish word ‘Barrosa' meaning ‘Hill of Roses,' evolving to the spelling Barossa. The first vineyards were planted by German Settlers in 1847. Since then, the Barossa has become one of Australia's premium wine regions, renowned for its beautiful Shiraz and red blends, as well as lovely and refreshing whites including Riesling and Semillon.
The Barossa has two distinct sub-regions - Eden Valley and Barossa Valley. Spread across these two sub-regions are a patchwork of predominantly four main soil types, gradating rainfall from south to north and variations in altitude between the two valleys. Key zones within these regions also add to the complex tapestry of meso- climates and soils, making individual block and even row-by-row selection a fascinating journey for the St Hallett Winemaking team.
The Shiraz fruit for this wine primarily comes from elevated well drained vineyards sites from the cooler southern and central sections of the Barossa Valley. Whilst the Grenache is being sourced from low vielding west and north western areas of Gomersol and Greenock where the vines truly struggle to survive to produce intensely flavoured low yielding crops.
