Tasting Notes

Aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, liquorice, cedar and cool mintiness are prominent in the glass, and complemented by mineral and spice characteristics. Medium bodied, elegant and ripe tannins give a really smooth mouthfeel.

Vinification Details.

After picking grapes are quickly transferred to Petaluma's Adelaide Hills winery, where thety are gently de-stemmed and crushed. The fermentation was carried out in potter fermenters with 'heading down boards' over a period of twenty days. Following continuous pumping over. The ferment was gentle pressed, and the wine transferred to French oak barriques for malolactic fermentation and then 20 months of maturation before bottling.

Producer Information

Petaluma is one of Australia's most important producers, famous for seeking out the finest terroirs in South Australia rather than taking a one-site-fits-all approach to its grapes. Riesling (one of Australia's very best) comes from the Hanlin Hill vineyard in the Clare Valley, Chardonnay from the cool climate Piccadilly Valley in the Adelaide Hills and Cabernet from Coonawarra. Andrew 'Ox' Hardy, a member of the original Hardy wine family and a walking encyclopaedia of South Australian wine, is now the man at the helm, ensuring these vineyards have a very exciting future.

Regional info.

The 'Hundred Line', used to divide up early blocks of land for intrepid early settlers, borders Petaluma's mature Coonawara vineyards. During an excellent growing season really good spring rain was followed by good falls in December and January, before the rain dried up in February. After a frosty 2007 growing season, the 2008 season produced only mild frosts. Consequently , the vineyards were in excellent conditions with average crop levels
