Tasting Notes
Made with Margaret River fruit, it is a classic exponent of the ‘modern' style of barrel fermented Chardonnay with fine, herb-spiked, nutty nose and a nice streak of something like green fig. The palate has very nice fruit, with a touch of leesy, waxy weight, but fine clarity and a zesty finish.
Vinification Details.
The fruit was hand picked, chilled overnight and manually sorted to eliminate damaged berries. A portion of the fruit was crushed and immediately pressed with the balance being loaded direct to the press for whole bunch pressing. Only free run juice is considered for Gold Turtle as this is the most elegant and clean juice possible. Most of the juice is seeded for fermentation but approximately 20% is allowed to “naturally†ferment in a mixture of new (30%) and one and two year old (70%) French barriques. The secondary malolactic fermentation is discouraged to maintain the natural backbone of acidity which is the key to the structure of Gold Turtle Chardonnay. About half of the barrels are regularly stirred to develop palate texture and complexity.
Producer Information
The winery takes its name from Madfish Bay which can found near Denmark in Western Australia's Great Southern and where, apparently, fish go loco. Designed to reflect WA's laid-back lifestyle, both the packaging and the juice are right on the money. As you'd expect from wines from the same stable as the mighty Howard Park they are classically cool-climate in style with a real vibrancy of fruit and an abundance of cheeky charm.
Regional info.
From the Madfish/Howrad Park stable, these brands is produced from the finest grapes sourced from specific GI vineyard sites to produce wines with true varietal expression:with Shiraz from Frankland River, Pinot Noir from Mt Barker, Tempranillo from Geographe, and Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay from Margaret River. Harvested at optimum maturity, and perfected to give you gleaming gold in a glass. Considered the king of the noble metals, Gold Turtle is a symbol of perfection, durability, and purity.
Margaret River is one of the worlds most vibrant and popular premium wine growing regions. The region stretches just over 100 kilometres from north to south and is up to 27 kilometres wide in parts, comprises the rolling hills of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin and is bordered by the Indian and Southern Oceans. Margaret River is one of the world's magical areas for chardonnay, producing powerfully intense wines of great length and elegance. They take longer than their Australian peers to evolve, but when they do, they are universally agreed to be Australia's finest.
