Tasting Notes
This very well-priced Pinot Noir from Great Southern in Western Australia, is full of juicy red cherry & strawberry fruit with hints of vanilla and forest floor characters.
Vinification Details.
Nearly half of the fruit was hand-picked, allowing the selection of very clean and sound fruit. The remaining fruit was gently de-stemmed, crushed and chilled and was then pumped to a static fermenter where it underwent cold maceration for optimal colour extraction.
Fermentation was by an addition of one of a number of Burgundian cultured yeast isolates. The fermenting must was allowed to reach temperatures of around 32C, excellent for tannin extraction in the variety. Fermentation took approximately ten days including aerative pump-overs during this time. The wine was pressed off its skins at the completion and was then settled for a short period in tank before being racked off its gross lees.
The wine was matured in French oak barrels for about 12 months where it underwent malolactic fermentation. Each parcel of fruit was then individually assessed for the final blend to ensure an optimal expression of fruit.
Producer Information
The winery takes its name from Madfish Bay which can found near Denmark in Western Australia's Great Southern and where, apparently, fish go loco. Designed to reflect WA's laid-back lifestyle, both the packaging and the juice are right on the money. As you'd expect from wines from the same stable as the mighty Howard Park they are classically cool-climate in style with a real vibrancy of fruit and an abundance of cheeky charm.
Regional info.
The MadFish range of fine West Australian wines are produced by Howard Park from grapes grown in the cool South-West region of Margaret River and the Great Southern.
The MadFish story begins in the far southern reaches of Western Australia where 15 kilometres from the quiet coastal town of Denmark is the picturesque Madfish Bay. According to local folklore, the bay's tranquillity is broken when two tides meet. The fish confused by this natural phenomenon, can be observed leaping in the air as if in a state of complete madness.
The artwork for the label was originally designed by the late Maxine Fumagalli, a Noongar artist from Western Australia's Great Southern, who had a deep love for the land and the people of the South-West region.
Her designs reflect the Aboriginal understanding that there is unity between land, sea, stars, animals and people, hence the inclusion of all elements in the label's design.
The traditional aboriginal water turtle design on the label is a symbol of perserverance and tolerance - no doubt characteristics displayed by the fish in MadFish Bay.
The fruit for the MadFish Pinot Noir is sourced from a variety of vineyards throughout the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Great Southern Pinot Noir produces fruit that shows an opulent black cherry and strawberry flavour profile.
