Tasting Notes
A unique blend showcasing aromatic lychees on the nose, a spicy and generous wine that pays homage to the elegant whites of Alsace but definitely speaks with an Australian accent. Generous lychee and tropical fruits from the Gewurtraminer, natural acidity and lingering flavours from the Riesling with mid-palate fruit and textural complexity from the Pinot Gris combine to create an intriguing yet very approachable wine.
Vinification Details.
The wine was made with great attention to detail and sensitivity to capture the purest expression of flavours from the vineyard. The juice was cold settled prior to fermentation, then fermented with neutral yeasts at cool temperatures (12-15C) to maintain pure fruit clarity and expression. The ferments lasted between 14-18 days, after which
the wine was cold stabilised prior to final blending and filtering.
Producer Information
Knappstein is one of the biggest names in the Clare Valley, perhaps Australia's most enigmatic wine region. Home to both full-bodied rich reds and lean, lemony Riesling, Clare's split personality takes on a bit of Bordeaux, a bit of Alsace and a dash of the Rhone - all with a distinctive Aussie accent. Glen Barry is the man in charge at Knappstein and having learnt his trade through time completing vintages in Sicily and Puglia, Okanagan in Canada, and Napa, this winemaker really knows his stuff!
Regional info.
Knappstein is based in the Clare Valley, an area much in vogue for its Rieslings and Knappstein make Riesling of course, along with other aromatic whites including Gewürztraminer, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. There are reds too, based on Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Knappstein's premium range appears under the "Enterprise" label.
As one of Australia's longest established wine regions, Clare Valley in South Australia offers a broad palette of differing topographies, geology and soils. Perched amid the North Mt Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley is 250 metres above sea level with its eastern escarpment rising to over 580 metres.
Climatically Clare is defined by warm dry days with prevailing south westerly winds from over the Great Southern Ocean bringing clear cold nights. The geology and soils of the valley are largely divided between iron rich slate and Terra Rossa over limestone. Subtle sub-regional differences and vineyard attributes contribute specific characteristics to wines from Clare.
Some of the fruit for this wine was sourced from high-altitude Clare vineyards which allowed the Gewurztraminer to maintain its acid structure as it slowly ripened. The old dry grown vines from the Watervale vineyard adds to the length of flavour and intensity.
