Tasting Notes
Elegant & powerful, it exhibits balance, sophistication and length of flavour. Lifted melon, grapefruit, and citrus fruit characters define the wine's aroma with underlying hazelnut and bready complexity appearing with time in the glass. Subtle barrel fermentation provides a fine creamy texture to the mid palate. The crisp acidity adds linearity to the palate and an immaculate finish with persistent citrus, cashew and toast characters.
Vinification Details.
The fruit was hand picked, chilled overnight and manually sorted to eliminate damaged berries. A portion of the fruit was crushed and immediately pressed with the balance being loaded direct to the press for whole bunch pressing. Only free run juice is considered for Howard Park as this is the most elegant and clean juice possible. Most of the juice is seeded for fermentation but approximately 20% is allowed to 'naturally' ferment in a mixture of new (60%) and one and two year old (40%) French barriques. The secondary malolactic fermentation is discouraged to maintain the natural backbone of acidity which is the key to the structure of Howard Park Chardonnay. About half of the barrels are regularly stirred to develop palate texture and complexity.
Producer Information
Howard Park is delighted to introduce a new winemaker for 2007, ex-Yalumba, Plantagenet and Millbrook star Tony Davis. With considerable experience in WA, and especially the Great Southern, Tony is an ideal choice to build on HP's success in recent years with Robert Parker being the latest to 'discover' the estate with a series of 90+ scores released in October. The wines have a purity of flavour and elegant structure that is difficult to achieve in Australia's warm climate and the style is wonderfully summed up by The Times' Jane Macquitty who described the 2005 Riesling as spiked with lime-zest and possessing "a lovely, long, tingling finish."
Regional info.
Howard Park Wines was established in 1986 and was one of the original pioneers of the Great Southern region. The founding owner of Howard Park, John Wade ventured west to Western Australia's South West with one belief: “I don't know any other region where you can produce both Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon as premium winesâ€. This founding belief began the journey of Howard Park. Now over 20 years on, Howard Park remains a family owned winery under the guidance of Jeff and Amy Burch. With a philosophy to produce wines of distinct regional character with an uncompromising commitment to quality Howard Park has forged an international reputation for their wines and an expanded range including single vineyard and multi regional wines from Margaret River and the Great Southern.
The Great Southern is one of Australia's coolest wine growing regions exposed to the cool Antarctic air coming off the Southern Ocean.
Margaret River is one of the world's magical areas for chardonnay, producing powerfully intense wines of great length and elegance. They take longer than their Australian peers to evolve, but when they do, they are universally agreed to be Australia's finest. The region is perhaps even better known for its cabernet sauvignon and cabernet blends.
