Tasting Notes
The wine is a very pale straw/green. It exhibits a wonderfully fragrant nose of snow peas, guava and dried sage with a little passionfruit. Juicy and tight with citrus acidity, the palate has herbal and grassy notes with some weight showing from the barrel fermented component. Finishing with typical crisp acidity and great fruit length the Howard Park 2009 Sauvignon Blanc is bright and fruit driven.
Vinification Details.
The fruit upon arrival at the winery was immediately processed to ensure the highest quality juice. Only free run juice, which is tighter and more finely structured as it has no phenolic character, was used for this wine. Most juice batches showed wonderfully pungent Sauvignon aromatics and the Margaret River component had wonderful palate weight. Most of the batches were kept separate and were cool fermented in stainless steel tanks to maintain the delicate fruit flavours. Two batches were barrel fermented to add a little more complexity and richness. Extensive blending trials were carried out to produce a wine that is very elegant but still powerful.
Producer Information
Howard Park is delighted to introduce a new winemaker for 2007, ex-Yalumba, Plantagenet and Millbrook star Tony Davis. With considerable experience in WA, and especially the Great Southern, Tony is an ideal choice to build on HP's success in recent years with Robert Parker being the latest to 'discover' the estate with a series of 90+ scores released in October. The wines have a purity of flavour and elegant structure that is difficult to achieve in Australia's warm climate and the style is wonderfully summed up by The Times' Jane Macquitty who described the 2005 Riesling as spiked with lime-zest and possessing "a lovely, long, tingling finish."
Regional info.
Howard Park Wines was established in 1986 and was one of the original pioneers of the Great Southern region. The founding owner of Howard Park, John Wade ventured west to Western Australia's South West with one belief: “I don't know any other region where you can produce both Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon as premium winesâ€. This founding belief began the journey of Howard Park.
Now over 20 years on, Howard Park remains a family owned winery under the guidance of Jeff and Amy Burch. With a philosophy to produce wines of distinct regional character with an uncompromising commitment to quality Howard Park has forged an international reputation for their wines and an expanded range including single vineyard and multi regional wines from Margaret River and the Great Southern.
The Great Southern is one of Australia's coolest wine growing regions exposed to the cool Antarctic air coming off the Southern Ocean.
