Tasting Notes
Pinotage is probably the grape with the most potential for development and improvement in South Africa. If it is grown correctly and vinified correctly, it becomes an interesting wine with lots of depth and flavour.
This wine offers raspberry, ripe peach and black cherry flavours with subtle oak nuances, a warm palate and delicate lingering finish.
Vinification Details.
Grapes for this wine are harvested from both their Helderberg property in the Golden Triangle, as well as their Bottelary property.
In the cellar, the grapes were crushed and allowed cold maturation for 24 - 48 hours. It is inoculated with French yeast strains and allowed to ferment with regular punch downs for 8 days on the skin. The wine is then drained from the skins and further fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation is partially finished in the barrel (about 20% of the wine). The wine is then allowed to age in 100% French oak for 12 months.
Regional info.
Stellenbosch is an important wine producing area in the Western Cape province of South Africa located at about 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of Cape Town. It is a hilly terrain with most vineyards lying at an elevation of about 100 meters in a sheltered valley. The overall terroir of Stellenbosch consists of a Mediterranean climate with warm and dry growing seasons, along with a variety of soils that are favorable in the production of high quality wines. South Africa currently has 101 957 hectares under vines, of which approximately 18% is planted in the wine of origin Stellenbosch region. Stellenbosch is indeed a very succesful wine making region, and has the most wine awards per capita/wine than any other region in South Africa!
